Dementia & Cognitive Support equips adult day services staff to care for the many participants living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Adult day centers are a vital support for people with dementia and their caregivers, and skilled, patient care makes the day safe, engaging, and dignified. This course covers what dementia is, how it affects memory, language, and behavior, person-centered and validating communication, meaningful engagement and activities, supporting daily needs, problem-solving challenging behaviors, and safety including wandering. It treats behavior as communication of an unmet need. The throughline is dignity through understanding: when you understand what a participant is experiencing, you can meet the need behind the behavior and create a day full of moments of connection and purpose.
