Medication Assistance prepares adult day services staff to support participants with their medications safely and within the law. Minnesota's rules require that anyone responsible for medication administration or assistance who is not a licensed health practitioner complete an MDH-approved trained medication aide program, or demonstrate competency to a registered nurse biennially. This course covers the difference between assistance and administration, who may give medications and the training required, the Rights of medication administration, documentation, recognizing and reporting errors and side effects, safe storage, and what unlicensed staff may not do. It emphasizes staying within your role and getting help when unsure. The throughline: medications help participants only when given correctly, by trained staff, with accurate documentation — and within the boundaries of your role and the center's procedures.
