Ethics & Professional Conduct addresses the ethical decisions and boundaries at the center of substance use treatment. Staff build trusting relationships with clients who are vulnerable, often early in recovery, and clear ethics and boundaries protect both the client and the worker. Counselors are also bound by their professional code under Chapter 148F. This course covers professional boundaries and the therapeutic relationship, dual relationships, gifts and money, confidentiality, self-disclosure (including staff in recovery), social media, the ethical principles guiding the work, and recognizing boundary crossings. It connects ethics to client rights and your own longevity in the field. The throughline: you can be genuinely supportive while holding the boundaries that keep the relationship therapeutic, ethical, and safe — especially important when working with people in early, fragile recovery.
