Understanding Addiction & Recovery gives SUD program staff a clear, compassionate, science-based understanding of substance use disorder and how people recover. The way staff understand addiction shapes how they treat clients — and stigma, even unintentional, undermines care. This course covers what substance use disorder is, how it affects the brain, why it's a medical condition rather than a moral failing, the role of stigma, the stages of change and the recovery process, common substances and their effects, withdrawal and overdose awareness, and medications for addiction treatment. It builds the foundation of empathy and knowledge front-line staff need. The throughline: addiction is a treatable chronic condition, recovery is real and common, and how you understand and talk about it directly affects a client's hope and outcomes.
