Family-Centered & Culturally Responsive Care shows mental health behavioral aides how to make skills last by partnering with families and honoring culture. Because a child spends far more time with family than with an aide, the surest path to durable change is coaching families in the same strategies the qualified professional taught — within the treatment plan. The course covers family-centered, family-driven care; families as experts on their child; family-systems thinking; and practical ways to engage families and coach them without overstepping. The second half builds cultural humility — a curious, non-assuming stance that treats each family as the expert on their own culture — with concrete culturally responsive practices: qualified interpreters (never the child), respecting family structure and elders, honoring beliefs about mental health, faith, and traditions, and sensitivity to history and safety. Aides also learn to recognize co-occurring needs in a family (a parent's mental illness or substance use affecting the child): report, don't treat, and act on safety. This module supports the family-centered planning, co-occurring, and culturally responsive topics of the within-90-day training under Minn. Stat. 245I.05, subd. 3(d), and connects to the required parent team training (MHBA-08).
