MHW-01 — Mental Illnesses in Rehabilitation Practice

Mental Illnesses in Rehabilitation Practice opens the CareCertify MH Rehabilitation Worker Core — a four-lesson series that delivers the heart of the 30-hour pre-service training Minnesota requires for mental health rehabilitation workers, mental health behavioral aides, and behavioral health practitioners under Minn. Stat. 245I.05, subd. 3(c). This lesson covers the first required topic: mental illnesses. Staff learn the mental health rehabilitation worker role and its supervision, then build a working knowledge of the conditions they will encounter most — depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, and trauma and PTSD — along with their common signs. The course teaches how to recognize distress and decompensation early, the essential line between observing and describing (the worker's job) and diagnosing (the professional's), when to escalate to crisis resources including 988 and county mobile crisis teams, and person-first, recovery-oriented language. It also introduces co-occurring substance use, which later lessons cover in depth. The throughline: see clearly, describe honestly, and support fully — recognition is the foundation of everything a rehabilitation worker does.
