COURSE DESCRIPTION — BHS-003: Understanding Substance Use Disorders
Credit Hours: 1.5 contact hours
Substance use disorders affect millions of Americans and are among the most common behavioral health conditions in home care. Despite this prevalence, stigma and misunderstanding remain significant barriers to effective care. This course provides an evidence-based, destigmatizing foundation for understanding SUDs — what they are, what they look like in home care clients, and how to respond with skill and compassion.
From the neuroscience of addiction to working with clients in recovery, this course prepares direct care staff to be effective, observant, and non-judgmental advocates for their clients’ health and safety.
This course covers:
– The medical model of addiction and the brain science behind substance use disorders
– Alcohol Use Disorder: signs, symptoms, and the serious risks of alcohol withdrawal
– Opioid Use Disorder: recognizing overdose and responding appropriately, including naloxone use
– Stimulant, cannabis, and prescription drug misuse in home care populations
– Harm reduction: principles and practical application
– Supporting clients in recovery: relapse, resilience, and compassionate responses
Audience: HHAs, CNAs, PCAs, DSPs, and all direct care staff.
Credit Hours: 1.5 contact hours
