Universal Precautions / Bloodborne Pathogens 245D Caregiver Certification | 0.75 Hours | CareCertify.net
In a direct care setting, exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials is a real occupational risk. The good news is that with the right knowledge and habits, that risk is manageable. Universal precautions exist for exactly this reason — to protect you, your coworkers, and the individuals you support every single day.
This course covers OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard as it applies to direct support professionals working under Minnesota’s 245D license. You will learn what bloodborne pathogens are, how they spread, and the specific practices that prevent exposure — from proper PPE use to sharps safety to what to do immediately after an incident occurs.
This course covers:
- What bloodborne pathogens are and the three most common — HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C
- What Universal Precautions means and why it applies to every person, every time
- Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIM) — what they are and how to handle them
- Personal Protective Equipment — when to use it, how to put it on, and how to remove it safely
- Safe sharps handling and disposal procedures
- Proper decontamination of surfaces and equipment after exposure
- The correct response to a needlestick, cut, or splash exposure
- Your employer’s obligations under OSHA — including the Hepatitis B vaccine
- Exposure reporting, documentation, and post-exposure follow-up procedures
Audience: Direct Support Professionals and all staff providing hands-on care under a Minnesota 245D license who may have occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials.
