When a client collapses, chokes, burns their hand, or stops breathing, you are the first person there. What you do in those first minutes matters more than almost anything else in your role as a Direct Support Professional. This course gives you the practical knowledge to respond — calmly, correctly, and quickly — to the most common medical emergencies you may encounter in a home care setting.

Covering adult, child, and infant CPR, AED operation, choking response, bleeding control, seizure management, stroke recognition, diabetic emergencies, anaphylaxis, and environmental emergencies, this course builds a complete foundation in first aid for 245D staff. Every topic is grounded in real scenarios relevant to the people you support.

This course covers:

• Adult, child, and infant CPR — correct technique, rate, and depth
• How and when to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
• Responding to choking in adults and infants
• Controlling serious bleeding and wound care
• Recognizing and responding to stroke using the FAST method
• Seizure response — what to do and what never to do
• Diabetic emergencies — hypoglycemia recognition and response
• Anaphylaxis and epinephrine (EpiPen) use
• Burns, fractures, and fall response
• Heat stroke and environmental emergencies
• 245D documentation and incident reporting after a medical emergency

Audience: Direct Support Professionals and all staff providing services under a Minnesota 245D license. First aid and CPR training is required under MN Statute 245D.09 as part of new employee orientation.

Note: This online course satisfies the knowledge training requirement for first aid and CPR. Your employer may require a separate in-person hands-on skills demonstration or current CPR certification card from an approved provider (Red Cross, American Heart Association) to meet full agency and licensing requirements. Check with your Designated Coordinator.
