COURSE DESCRIPTION — BHS-001: Introduction to Behavioral Health in Home Care

This foundational course introduces home care workers to the essential concepts of behavioral health — what it is, why it matters, and how it shows up in everyday direct care work. Whether you are new to home care or have years of experience, this course will strengthen your understanding of the mind-body connection and prepare you to provide more holistic, effective, and compassionate support.

Behavioral health goes beyond mental illness. It encompasses how thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and substance use interact with our overall health and quality of life. In home care, you are uniquely positioned to observe changes, build trust, and serve as a critical link between clients and the broader care team.

This course covers:
– The definition of behavioral health and how it differs from a purely medical model
– Common conditions: mood disorders, anxiety, psychosis, substance use, and trauma-related conditions
– The home care worker’s specific observational and reporting role
– Communication strategies including active listening and open-ended questioning
– Documentation skills for identifying behavioral health changes
– Legal and ethical responsibilities: HIPAA, mandatory reporting, professional boundaries
