Activities of Daily Living — ADLs — are the most personal tasks in a person’s day. Bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, toileting, mobility. When someone needs support with these tasks, they are trusting you with moments that matter deeply to their dignity and sense of self. How you show up in those moments defines the quality of care you provide.

This course gives direct support professionals a clear, practical understanding of what ADLs are, how to support them in a way that is safe, respectful, and person-centered, and what your legal and ethical obligations are when providing personal care under a 245D license.

This course covers:

• The six core Activities of Daily Living and how each is defined in home care settings
• The difference between ADLs and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs)
• Person-centered approaches to personal care — following the individual’s preferences, routines, and choices
• How to provide physical assistance while preserving independence and dignity
• Proper body mechanics and safety techniques to protect both you and the person you support
• Recognizing and responding to changes in a person’s ability to perform ADLs
• Documentation requirements when providing or assisting with personal care tasks
• Understanding the support plan — how ADL responsibilities are assigned and what you are authorized to do

Audience: Direct Support Professionals and all staff providing personal care or home and community-based services under a 245D license.
