Medication administration is one of the highest-risk responsibilities a Direct Support Professional can carry. A single error — the wrong dose, the wrong time, the wrong person — can have serious consequences for the people you support. This course provides the foundational training required under Minnesota Statute 245D.05 for staff who administer or assist with medications in home care settings.

You will learn the six rights of medication administration, how to correctly document what you give and when, how to recognize and respond to medication errors, and how to handle refusals and PRN medications. The course also covers the legal boundaries of your role — what you may and may not do — and how to work within your agency’s specific medication policies.

Important: This online course meets the knowledge training requirement for medication administration under 245D. However, MN Statute 245D also requires a separate in-person observed skills demonstration completed with a qualified RN or competency-verified staff. That demonstration must be arranged through your employer before you are authorized to administer medications independently.

• 245D documentation requirements — what to record, when, and how to correct errors
• Recognizing and responding to medication errors and adverse reactions
• Handling refusals, missed doses, and PRN (as-needed) medications
• Safe storage and disposal of medications
• Legal scope of your role and the limits of your authority
• Working with your agency’s Medication Administration Record (MAR)

Audience: Direct Support Professionals and home care staff authorized or seeking authorization to administer medications under a Minnesota 245D license. Must complete an in-person skills demonstration with your employer to meet full 245D requirements.
